Tradition generally dictates that the Scottish National takes place on the Saturday following the Aintree Grand National, however in 2022 the contest will take place one week before it’s Merseyside equivalent, the two-day Ayr meeting getting underway on Friday 1st April with the Scottish Grand National itself taking place on Saturday 2nd April.

The Scottish National is one of the biggest races of the racing calendar and the huge prize purse reflects this fact. This promises to be a thoroughly entertaining contest and unlike last year when Covid-19 restrictions prevented spectators from flocking to the course, the 2022 event will see eager racegoers descending on Ayr from all over the country.

Most of the major UK stables will be represented in the 2022 Scottish Grand National on Saturday 2nd April and the 30 final entries have now been confirmed.

As usual we will be the first to bring you news of all the Scottish National Runners & Riders.

Vintage Clouds was successful in the Ultima Handicap Chase on the opening day of the 2021 Cheltenham festival, the Sue Smith inmate running in the opening handicap of the meeting for the fifth successive season. As such, Smith is eyeing-up more big-race glory for the eleven-year-old in the 2021 Scottish Grand National.

This was a result hugely welcomed by connections and the veteran grey provided the north with a first win at the Festival since Hawk High won for Tim Easterby in 2014. On the back of this, Vintage Clouds will be aimed at the Scottish Grand National at Ayr Racecourse on 17th April and the bookmakers go general odds of 20/1 on the Sue Smith runner.

Takingrisks on his way to Scottish Grand National glory in 2019

The Scottish Grand National is the biggest race in Scotland and takes place each year at Ayr Racecourse in April. This steeplechase is open to runners aged five years and older and is run over a distance of 3 miles 7 furlongs and 176 yards. In total there are 27 fences over the distance.

This race was first run in 1858 and involved 32 jumps, many of these being stone walls. The first races were held at Houston in Renfrewshire but the event moved to Bogside Racecourse near Irvine in 1867. It moved to its present location in 1965 when Bogside closed and it was increased to its present length at this time.

Several winners of the Scottish Grand National have also won the Aintree Grand National, most notably Red Rum who won both races in 1974, the only horse ever to have won both in the same year.
